About the Terpenes found in Namaste Cultivars
There are six terpenes that appear in high quantities in many of Namaste’s products: Humulene, myrcene, pinen, caryophyllene and terpinolene. Read on to learn which Namaste products contain terpenes.
Humulene:
These Namaste cultivars – D. Bubba, DM2 (Durga Mata 2) and GG4 (Gorilla Glue #4) – are high in humulene, a terpene with spicy, herbaceous and subtly floral aromas.
Humulene, like myrcene and pinene, is a fairly common cannabis terpene that appears in many Namaste strains. While it appears in smaller quantities than myrcene and pinene, it creates a spicy, woody flavour that will make you think of a bouquet of flowers.
In addition to cannabis, humulene can also be found in wood and hops. Scientists are investigating its anti-inflammatory benefits, and its antifungal and antibacterial properties. Humulene also plays an important role for the cannabis plant, helping to defend it against pests and fungus.
Pinene:
These Namaste cultivars – Ultra Sour and Wappa – are high in pinene, a terpene commonly found in pine trees, rosemary, eucalyptus and orange peel.
Alpha-pinene (or α-pinene) and beta-pinene (or β-pinene) are the two known versions of pinene. This terpene keeps a low profile, rarely taking centre stage, but still appears in some Namaste cultivars.
Pinene brings more than just that pine flavour, though. Like other terpenes, scientists are researching the impact it has on how consumers feel after consuming cannabis. Some studies are focused on the way it interacts with THC to combat the short-term memory impairment that some users experience, and the impacts that it could have on anxiety and pain relief.
Caryophyllene:
These cannabis cultivars from Namaste – D. Bubba, Ultra Sour, Citrique, GG4 (Gorilla Glue #4) and Sensi Star, Shishkaberry – are high in caryophyllene, a terpene with peppery, spicy aromas.
Terpenes like caryophyllene (or beta-caryophyllene, as it’s sometimes known) occur naturally in cannabis plants. Caryophyllene is responsible for the peppery, warm, spicy smell of some strains. A little bit pungent, a little bit spicy, caryophyllene is also found in hops, rosemary, cloves and cinnamon.
Caryophyllene stands out for its pronounced pepper notes. Like adding black pepper on your favourite dish, this terpene really adds a kick to cannabis strains that contain it.
Scientists are researching caryophyllene to investigate its potential uses as a pain reliever, antioxidant, antidepressant, and to help people consume less alcohol.
Terpinolene:
These cannabis cultivars from Namaste – Ultra Sour, Citrique, DM2 (Durga Mata #2), and MK Ultra – are high in terpinolene, a terpene with aromas of pine, flowers, herbs and citrus fruit.
Terpenes occur naturally in cannabis plants and are responsible for the way a strain tastes and smells. They protect the plant by repelling herbivores and attracting the predators of herbivores. Humans are likely most familiar with terpenes from their appearance in essential oils and aromatherapy, as well as perfumes and flavoured food additives.
Terpinolene has a rich, complex taste and smell that hints of pine, flowers, herbs and citrus fruit. It’s a scent associated with freshness. In addition to cannabis, it can be found in tea tree, apples and spices like nutmeg and cumin.
Myrcene:
These cannabis cultivars from Namaste – D. Bubba, Citrique, Sensi Star, DM2 (Durga Mata #2), Shishkaberry, Wappa and MK Ultra – are high in myrcene, a terpene with rich, hoppy, balsam aromas.
Myrcene, like other terpenes, gives cannabis its unique flavour and scent, and can also impact how patients feel after consuming cannabis, possibly due to the entourage effect. You’ll recognize myrcene’s rich, hoppy, balsam flavour from beer and lemongrass, and many Namaste cultivars, as it is the most abundant terpene found in cannabis.
Myrcene is used in herbal and traditional medicine as a sleep aid and muscle relaxant, but this is still under investigation by scientists. As the most abundant terpene, myrcene is one of the ten major terpenes produced by the cannabis plant.
Limonene:
These cannabis cultivars from Namaste – Ultra Sour, GG4 (Gorilla Glue #4), Sensi Star, DM2 (Durga Mata #2), Shishkaberry,Ultra Sour, MK Ultra are high in limonene, a terpene commonly associated with fruity, citrus aromas.
Citrusy, and lemony-fresh, limonene is a terpene found in many cannabis cultivars. Like other terpenes, limonene is a scented oil that gives cannabis its unique scent and taste. While limonene appears in cannabis, it can also be found in naturally-occurring places like citrus rinds and juniper, and also as an additive in cosmetics, perfumes and cleaning products.
